A Circle of Giving
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (April, 1984)
Author: Ellen Howard
Average review score:

What I Think about Circle of Giving
It is an expressive story and very realistic, too. It was touching and made you realize that not all people may be able to do everything others can do, but everyone has true feelings. Marguerite and Francie were special to each other and shared an extremely special and genuine bond of friendship that is rare in most friendships. The characters seemed almost real, and it was easy to imagine what life was like for Jeannie-- having an admirable older sister determined to help a kindly disabled girl fit in, a group of typical neighborhood children who seemed thoughtless at first but in the end realized that just because someone was different didn't necessarily mean they were unfriendly, strict but kind typical 1920's parents, an extraordinarily talented, charitable woman (Mrs. Hanisian)two withdrawn but changeable teenage girls (Marie and Zadora) and finally, the sensitive but lovable main character, Jeannie Sloan. A Circle of Giving is a wonderfully penetrating focus on friendship and caring and I think everyone should read it. If you're like me, it will touch and change your heart forever and give you a gift--the gift of caring and honesty.

Civil Resistance in Kosovo
Published in Paperback by Pluto Press (01 October, 2000)
Author: Howard Clark
Average review score:

good book about a troubled place
Clark's book is an excellent and thoroughly researched history of the little know civil resistance movement in Kosovo that sprang up in the early 1990s until war broke out in 1998. Clark's research is impeccable (much of it first hand) and this piece is a must read for anyone trying to get a more thorough understanding of this conflict.

The Classical Cd Listener's Guide: The Best on Cd (The Best on Cd)
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Pubns (March, 1999)
Author: Howard Blumenthal
Average review score:

Very informative
Reviewing music is a subjective task. Bloomenthal admits that. He gives an honest attempt to point out some of the most significant pieces from selected composers. With this guide you won't have to waste money experimenting.

Clausewitz
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (January, 1993)
Author: Michael C. Howard
Average review score:

Cliff Notes to Clausewitz
Clausewitz is notoriously difficult for the novice to master -- some would argue that no one has ever entirely "mastered" Clausewitz. Be that as it may, a legion of frustrated amateur strategists can attest to the difficulty of picking up Clausewitz's "On War" and trying to read it through without a guide. In the "Clausewitz" volume in the Past Masters series, the novice as well as the experienced strategist can gain an introduction to the master's life, experiences, and writings that will make the first reading intelligible and that will serve as a quick review of Clausewitz's main concepts in a format that can easily be read in an evening.

This is a book that should stand next to "On War" in every strategist's library.

A Cloak for the Dreamer (Brainy Day Books)
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (March, 1995)
Authors: Aileen Friedman and Kim Howard
Average review score:

A warm and wonderful way to introduce geometric shapes!
As a new teacher I am always looking for good literature to introduce mathematics. This warm family story uses loving, hard-working characters to spin a tale of promises and dreams, all wrapped around geometry. The possibilities for geometric-based lessons are endless. When I read it to my second grade class they were enthralled.

Colin Wilson: The Man and His Mind
Published in Paperback by Harper Collins - UK (February, 1991)
Author: Howard F. Dossor
Average review score:

An outstanding synopsis of Colin Wilson's work.
Colin Wilson is an extraordinary author of over 100 books, but because of his wide range of topics, his works are difficult to appreciate as a whole. It would be wrong (and sad) to judge Wilson on the basis of one theme or one of his books. In this book, Dossor traces the major areas of Wilson's work and presents an overview of each topic. Dossor makes Wilson's ideas clear and leaves the reader with a renewed appreciation for the depth of Wilson's thinking. Dossor helps us get the longer view and leaves us wanting to go back to Wilson for more of the original. An outstanding synopsis.

Collected Plays: Claw, No End of Blame, Victory, the Castle, Scenes from an Execution
Published in Paperback by Riverrun Pr (September, 1990)
Author: Howard Barker
Average review score:

Having Drowned, Appreciating the Flood.
For those interested in the English language - its violence, naturalness and unaturalness, modern poetic capacity, or jagged edges - no one in the last 150 years has used it with the same dexterity as Mr. Barker. This collection covers his early-middle period - he's written well over forty plays - where as an artist he is still searching for balance between the importance of narrative, and his sheer expressionism of language. The results are inestimable. It is a life changing threshold for any serious student of writing in theatre - having passed through work such as this, any return to what was before is almost impossible - as generations of practitioners in Europe will attest. This is the collection to start with. As a writer, Barker is prolific beyond the bounds of believability - and even his admirers have difficulty in agreeing which are his best - but here are three plays (Victory, Scenes From an Execution, and The Castle) which show an unmatched display of power and control over the medium.

Collected Poems of Howard Nemerov
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (July, 1981)
Author: Howard Nemerov
Average review score:

MAKE BIG MONEY! WRITE POEMS IN SPARE TIME!
Howard Nemerov is the most entertaining poet I have ever read. He has the courage to be funny, the wit to be political, the heart to be intimate, the hormones to be irrational, the brains to be profound. He has more to say about anything than any other writer I've encountered. Take "The Beautiful Lawn Sprinkler" - a short gem about the metaphysical mysteries of his, well, lawn sprinkler. Although this may sound fluffy, don't worry - he won't waste your time. In addition to his talent at spotting the Eternal in the Everyday, he's also good at saying a lot in just a few phrases. He is never long winded (he summed up the paradoxical nature of God in just two lines in "Creation Myth on a Mobius Band"), he's always accessible (he's written many short-and-to-the-point poems called "gnomes"), and I for one would be proud to debase myself by writing a corny, on-line review just to know that someone might hate it enough to buy the book and prove me wrong.
